The passage of Pierce County Charter Amendment No. 1
“Election of Sheriff” places the Sheriff in a unique
position. When the final vote was taken during the charter commission meetings, 2006 Charter Review Commissioner Ken Dolan (Council District 6, Pos 3) made it a point to have entered into the meeting minutes as public record the fact that the Sheriff holding office on the effective date of the amendment may choose to serve as Sheriff until a successor is elected and commences to serve. Commissioner Dolan questioned the attorneys supplied by the prosecuting attorneys office extensively regarding the powers, duties and responsibilities of the interim Sheriff and was assured, and it is part of the charter review commission record, that the Sheriff in place when the charter amendment is certified becomes Sheriff pro-tem and is answerable to the people as if he/she were elected. The next two years will see Sheriff Paul Pastor serving as Pierce County’s Sheriff pro-tem - not as an appointed sheriff who is answerable to the Executive. The passage of Pierce County Charter Amendment No. 8 “Balance of Power” further effects elected positions within the county by reducing the administrative power of the County Executive over other elected executive departments. |
